Xpidemix: Must have Board Games You Can’t Miss Out On!

 It’s always an exciting weekend for founders, Imran and Rahim, and the players that visit Xpidemix for a game. This week Fairmart interviewed Xpidemix, a local retail store that specializes in board games and tabletop games. Fuelled by their passion for board games, the founders started an online store in 2014 selling miniature games like X-wing. Xpidemix gradually grew and set-up its first physical store in East Coast Road in June of 2017 with an aim in mind: To create a large community of board game players and providing them with a large variety of board games to choose from.

When we were in the store, we saw players strategizing over what their next move should be. It was intense! The tension broke when one of the players had a bad roll and everyone started laughing. Having only ever played Monopoly and Exploding Kittens, here are some questions that we asked Rahim. 

What is your favourite board game?‍

“My favourite game would definitely be Talisman.” Rahim replies. “It is a guided RPG that immerse you into a fantasy world, depending on which character you pick, you will need to have different strategies to defeat the other characters and win the game. Some aspect of luck is involved, so when playing with your friends and family you will get to know who are the risk takers and the unlucky ones.”

What are some good board games that you would recommend?

“It depends on how well-versed you are. For people who are just starting out, I would recommend gateway games such as Pandemic, Ticket to Ride, Splendor and Catan. This would introduce players to strategic thinking and rule memorization. For advanced board game players, I would definitely recommend Twilight Imperium. It has been around for more than 20 years, but the game never fails to keep me engaged and entertained. You can get to choose different characters, and they each have a different strategy that you can play. It takes some time to learn the game, but once you start, you will get hooked!”

I love playing Exploding Kittens, are there similar games you would recommend?

“Exploding Kittens is fun and easy to play. Similar alternatives to the game would be games like OrganATTACK! and Unstable Unicorns, definitely a game that you would enjoy with your friends and family during a gathering.”

One of the challenges for board game stores is to have a large enough variety to cater to every gamers’ wants and needs.
